Buyer

Our Supply Chain Department delivers efficient logistics and procurement services and support throughout all business and technical areas of TRIUMF. If you are interested in being part of this service group, we are currently looking for a Buyer to join our Procurement. The ideal candidate will possess purchasing experience in the following commodity areas: Computer, Electronic, Electrical and Technical Systems. The scope of the position includes continuous effort to improve operations and costs, to decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and to provide quality customer service.

If you are customer focused and eager to purchase and expedite commodities in a timely and cost effective way, here are some specifics of work you will be assigned:

  • reviewing requests and interacting with vendors
  • examining price, suitability, and availability of items or services; researching products
  • comparing specifications and reviewing alternatives; evaluating invitations to bid
  • problem and complaint resolution
  • advising and guiding end-users on Purchasing decisions
  • mastering TRIUMF's ERP system (AGRESSO) to improve buying efficiencies
  • special projects and/or overflow work from the Procurement Manager when needed

As a self-starter and quick learner, your core competencies, skills and qualifications will include:

  • An understanding of Supply Chain Management processes
  • A thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of centralized purchasing, the national standards of purchasing methods, and a solid understanding of the entire supply chain process
  • Familiarity with the commodity areas listed above, including sources of supplies, markets, price trends, grades, and qualities
  • A solid understanding of common business practices relating to the purchase, pricing, terms, shipment, taxes, and payment for commodities and services must be demonstrated in order to be effective
  • An understanding of contract administration
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills
  • Excellent oral and written English communication, comprehension and interpretation skills
  • Demonstrated experience working with ERP systems used in managing business processes
  • A good working knowledge of the internet and internet sourcing
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel and Word)
  • Good numerical reasoning and analytical ability, and inherent attentiveness to detail, and the ability to multi-task and deal with changing priorities
  • Strong relationship building and people skills to foster co-operation between diverse groups, and the ability to work as an effective team member
  • A university degree or the equivalent in training and experience
  • 5 + years' experience as a Buyer
  • SCMP/ CPPB certification
  • Legally able to work in Canada
