Competition # 612

Safety Systems Group Leader

At present, we are accepting applications for a Safety Systems Group (SSG) Leader. This group is responsible for the specification, design, implementation and maintenance of TRIUMF's Radiation Safety Systems, and for the maintenance, repair, and calibration of a wide variety of different types of radiation monitors and laboratory detectors.

Radiation Safety Systems protect personnel from radiation due to accelerator operation and generally consist of at least two separate sub-systems: an Access Control Interlock System that uses interlocks to keep people away from areas where prompt radiation levels are expected to be high during accelerator operation, and a Radiation Monitoring System that uses radiation detectors and other interlocks to measure and limit radiation levels in accessible areas outside shielding and barriers. Both sub-systems involve software applications and hardware infrastructure of varying degrees of complexity. Portable radiation monitoring equipment augments the functionality of these sub-systems. Because this is personnel protection equipment many aspects of the position require adherence to a quality management system protocol that has been established to ensure that they meet regulatory requirements and operate with a high degree of reliability.

In this challenging career position you will also have the opportunity to participate in the upgrade of existing 'legacy' systems as well as installation and commissioning of new systems.

As the successful applicant, you will be responsible for:

  • Liaising with TRIUMF accelerator specialists, end users and Environmental Health and Safety Group (EH&SG) members and guiding the development and documentation of functional requirements for new safety systems;
  • Overseeing the design, specification and implementation of safety systems to meet functional requirements including displays, alarms and data-logging utilities where required;
  • Collaborating with other SSG members in the hands-on trouble-shooting and repair of all aspects of safety systems, including mechanical, electrical and software;
  • Overseeing the design and implementation of proposals for upgrading legacy radiation safety system hardware and software;
  • Overseeing the preparation of related budget, scheduling and testing documentation;
  • Collaborating with other EH&SG members in the specification, selection, and calibration of a wide variety of radiation detectors;
  • Preparing system design documentation for regulatory agencies and presenting for approval in internal Design Reviews;
  • Preparing system operating instructions and delivering training to operations groups;
  • Participating in other safety and quality management committees;
  • Supervising other SSG members, typically an engineer and two technicians, assigning day to day tasks and long-term projects.

This position requires the incumbent to be trained and designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

As the ideal candidate, you will offer:

  • Knowledge of the applications of digital logic systems such as PLCs and pulse counting equipment;
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and best industry practices for the design of personnel protection systems;
  • Knowledge of the principles and instrumentation used in radiation detection and of radiation protection and dose and dose rate limits;
  • The desire for a combination of both `hands on, in-the-field' installation work and off-line development system work with the ability to provide suggestions and solutions for problems;
  • Strong technical writing skills supported by a good understanding of scientific terminology;
  • Effective interpersonal skills are necessary as the incumbent coordinates a team and liaises with a variety of levels of staff;
  • Flexibility and the ability to trouble-shoot active systems using standard electronic test instruments to satisfy operational requirements, reacting quickly and working within tight time constraints.

Your minimum qualifications will include a MSc in science/applied science or an engineering discipline from an accredited Canadian program or equivalent, and at least 10 years of relevant engineering experience after graduation level, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

TRIUMF offers a creative, collaborative team environment working with brilliant individuals. We are located in Pacific Spirit Park on the campus of the University of British Columbia in beautiful Vancouver, BC. On-site amenities include a café, showers and secure bicycle storage.

The position offers a comprehensive benefits package, a competitive salary, vacation and an excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:
