Electronics Technician - Power Supplies

Central to the success of TRIUMF are a host of accelerators; a 500MeV high intensity H- cyclotron, room temperature heavy ion linear accelerators, a superconducting heavy ion linac and three small cyclotrons for industrial and medical applications. TRIUMF's High Power System Group is responsible for the design and implementation of DC power converters and other electronic apparatus associated with the TRIUMF accelerators. In support of the Group's activities, we are currently recruiting an Electronics Technician to fill an intermediate level position. In this role you will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair existing equipment, and provide support for the design, implementation, installation and commissioning of new projects. Specifically, you will:

  • Monitor power supplies performance, and address issues through troubleshooting, repairing faulty equipment and supporting maintenance activities
  • Provide recommendations for possible equipment upgrades, component selection and maintenance duties
  • Contribute to new facility design, procurement and installations
  • Ensure existing and new installation documentation is kept up to date

The position will require you to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

  • Good knowledge of DC power conversion technology, both theoretical and practical, that includes series pass regulated supplies, shunt regulated supplies, and high frequency switch mode supplies of various technologies
  • Practical, hands-on skills and ability to work with relevant equipment and diagnostic tools
  • A clear understanding of hazards associated with high energy systems, and methods to reduce risk of exposure
  • Basic mechanical skills and good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively work as a team member, and interact with external suppliers
  • Familiarity with Electrical Safety Regulations
  • An Electronics Technology or Electronics Engineering Technology diploma from a technical college or institute
  • At least 5 years of relevant and practical experience in high power electronics, including direct, hands-on experience with DC power supplies

As the ideal candidate, you will also possess basic mechanical skills and good written and verbal communication skills. Your interpersonal skills are noteworthy and allow you to work effectively as a team member, and to interact professionally with all staff and external suppliers. While not required, practical knowledge of CAD software would be a definite asset.
