Mechanical Engineering Technician (Contract)

Our Science Technology Department assists the physics community users in bringing to reality their experiments by providing technical resources for the design, construction, and commissioning of their experiments. Within this department, our Detector Engineering and Construction group contributes heavily to the design, development, and construction of advanced detectors for very diverse applications. At present we have an immediate contract term available within this group for an intermediate level technician who will provide a wide variety of mechanical engineering technology services for our ARIEL Beamlines and ATLAS ITk projects. The range of responsibilities will include:

  • Assists in the procurement, commissioning and installation of ARIEL beamline components.
  • Confirms required equipment quantities, procurement of components, and other mechanical equipment required for completion of transport beamline work. This includes accessing the PDM vault for BOMs from "approved for manufacture" SolidWorks drawings and other CAD formats for equipment needs and confirming information accuracy.
  • Installs and aligns new mechanical components for projects and procures equipment when necessary for assembly of the silicon detector modules. These tasks may require hands on work on delicate silicon electronic devices.
  • Develops SolidWorks concept drawings for manufacture of special silicon detector assembly equipment.
  • Coordinates work with other site specialties such as Electricians, Designers, Machinists, plant services crane crew, etc.
  • Works independently, with minor guidance, on the assembly, operation and maintenance of silicon detector assembly equipment such as Delvotec G5 wire bonder, Mitutoyo CMM, Dage 4000 wire pull tester, AeroTech pick and place Cartesian type gantry, Keyence digital microscope system and other sensitive clean room equipment.
  • Maintain a documented schedule of work tasks and report progress at group meetings
  • Additional duties may include assessing received job submissions for process in the S & T manufacturing shop, and entering these in the manufacturing queue.
  • Onsite safety training to be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker

Requirements:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude together with good judgment in selecting appropriate approaches and application of basic mechanical engineering technology techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to use machining equipment to undertake detailed design, fabrication, and assembly of parts based on conceptual designs.
  • Experience with 3D mechanical modeling applications such as SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity with use of MS Word and Excel spreadsheet.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate cut off saws, drill press, and all power and hand tools.
  • Some knowledge in the production and assembly of sensitive electronic devices.
  • Knowledge or experience with manufacturing processes, machine tools, and NC machining using Mastercam is also desirable.
  • Experience with PDM Works and AutoCad will be considered an asset.
  • A diploma in mechanical engineering technology from a technical institute such as BCIT with at least 3 to 5 years of practical experience after graduation.
  • Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for the duration of the contract.
