Competition # 606

Detector Instrument Engineer (Contract)

Within TRIUMF, our detector group has an international reputation for developing and constructing state-of-the-art detectors, as well as developing new detector technologies. The group contributes heavily to the design, development, and construction of advanced detectors for very diverse applications. While its roots lie in the development of detectors for particle and nuclear physics, the activities have expanded over time to support advanced detector development for molecular and materials sciences and nuclear medicine.

At present we have an immediate opening for an early career level Engineer to fill a maternity leave vacancy for a 10 to 12 month term. This position will have responsibility for providing design, prototyping and production of detectors of energetic particles for the research programs at TRIUMF and collaborating laboratories abroad. This position is well suited to an engineer looking to gain further experience while working on unique projects in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.

To give you a better idea of your role, here are some of the responsibilities you will be assigned:

  • Design, construct and commission a variety of detector systems for use in scientific experiments
  • Report progress at regular group meetings
  • Design and test gas recycling systems.
  • Maintain or modify existing negative pressure water cooling systems, and design, test, commission new systems.

If you are excited by the type of work described above, then this position will be worth exploring if your knowledge, skills, experience, and qualifications match the following position requirements:

  • A thorough understanding of particle detector concepts and design, including physical processes important to the generation of signals inside the detector, special mechanical techniques that are applied to detector construction, and electronic circuits and techniques that are applied to sense the typically tiny signals and transmit them for further processing
  • The ability to focus on details in all aspects of design, production and management activities
  • An understanding and capability of working with 3D CAD / CAM, preferably SolidWorks
  • Ideally some experience working with gas mixing and recycling systems, and/or negative pressure water cooling systems
  • The ability to work with changing requirements and balance conflicting priorities
  • Good interpersonal, oral and written communications skills, and leadership potential
  • The ability to work effectively as a team member and establish good working relationships

Your minimum qualifications will include a BSc in applied science or an engineering discipline from an accredited Canadian program or equivalent, and at least 2 to 5 years of relevant engineering experience after graduation level, or, the equivalent combination of education and experience. You will ideally have relevant training or hands on experience in mechanical design of particle detectors.

TRIUMF offers a creative, collaborative team environment working with brilliant individuals. We are located in Pacific Spirit Park on the campus of the University of British Columbia in beautiful Vancouver, BC. On-site amenities include a café, showers and secure bicycle storage.

This contract position offers a comprehensive benefits package, a competitive salary, vacation and an excellent opportunity to enhance your engineering career portfolio in a high profile national research facility.
