Irradiation Facilities Coordinator

Together with our commercialization partner TRIUMF Innovations, we are working to enhance Canada's capacity to translate research breakthroughs into products and services that will drive innovation in health and related life sciences and technologies. As part of our technology transfer and commercialization programme, TRIUMF provides proton and neutron beams for radiation effect testing of electronics and materials. Typically the testing is carried out to study radiation effects such as single event effects and total dose damage on electronics to be used in space, avionics and ground level applications.

In support of these initiatives we are looking for a team player who will assist in the coordination of the operation and development of our Proton and Neutron irradiation facilities (PIF & NIF). The position also carries with it the responsibility for providing stellar customer relations for the irradiation programs and also represents TRIUMF to an international user base. You will be challenged in a number of ways with a variety of specific responsibilities which include:

  • Assisting the Manager in coordinating and optimizing scheduling of beam time for PIF & NIF.
  • Providing professional, courteous and competent customer services to PIF & NIF customers
  • Inspecting to ensure that all equipment is operational, and carrying out the necessary quality assurance and calibrations
  • Anticipating new requirements or developments and taking the initiative to carry out this work and publish results, in collaboration with the Manager
  • Complying with TRIUMF safety regulations and preparing necessary safety documentation and reviews
  • Coordinating the administrative side of the operation in producing quotes, invoices, purchase orders, customs and shipping forms, visitor forms, etc.
  • Staying current with the international user base and relevant technologies by attending relevant conferences and workshops
  • From time to time, during the course of carrying out operations, maintenance and development of the facilities, you may be required to provide technical oversight or direction to staff from various TRIUMF support groups such as: controls, operations, beam lines, diagnostics, safety, design office, shipping and receiving.
  • In-house training to be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

Our ideal candidate will have a wide range of knowledge and skills. During an interview with our hiring team you will have an opportunity to tell us how your abilities, education, experience and training match the following position requirements:

  • A general knowledge of beam optics, cyclotrons, particle detectors, radiation dosimetry and protection, digital and analog electronics is necessary.
  • Good computing and simulation skills and a demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with particle interaction codes such as FLUKA, MCNPX or GEANT.
  • Attention to the accuracy of calibrations and reliability of the operational systems
  • A good understanding of proton and neutron interactions in matter
  • Basic hands-on mechanical and electronic skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities, outstanding interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to effectively communicate information regarding radiation and particle beams to customers and non-physicists to ease concerns about safety and radiation issues.
  • An advanced degree in physics or engineering physics with several years of experience in experimental nuclear physics, particle physics or radiation testing.
