The Information Systems & Technology (IST) Department at TRIUMF has the responsibility for providing computing resources to the entire TRIUMF community, and Linux servers form a core component of these resources. They run a mix of open-source, commercial and in-house-developed applications. At present we are currently looking for a System Administrator whose primary focus will be automating all aspects of their life cycle. A key component of the role is the operation of the server-virtualization system, including the server and storage hardware on which it runs. You will:

  • Continuously improve and automate the testing and deployment procedures
  • Configure proactive health monitoring of infrastructure and software
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation, and review documentation of other group members
  • Identify security requirements for new applications, software products and other information-technology infrastructure
  • Monitor vulnerability announcements, evaluate potential risk to TRIUMF, and apply security patches as needed
  • Debug and solve complex problems related to Information systems
  • Keep your knowledge of IT best-practices up to date, particularly of Linux servers and DevOps tools

If you are enthused by the prospect of being involved with our busy IST team and doing what you do best, we encourage you to apply. As our ideal candidate you will also have:

  • a broad background in information technology with experience in Linux system-administration, storage-system management, virtualization and automation
  • a thorough understanding of network concepts, with some exposure to system administration of network equipment, and have a sound working knowledge of best-practices in network security
  • the ability to communicate effectively with non-technical users and to be empathetic to their needs
  • the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to provide accurate documentation and record keeping
  • a bachelor's degree or diploma in computer science, electrical engineering or other relevant discipline with at least five years of relevant experience
