Competition # 595

Project Manager

Our Project Management Office (PMO) is responsible for oversight and governance of all projects at TRIUMF, from conception to completion. Currently, the PMO is seeking a Project Manager for a particle physics experiment installation being prepared at TRIUMF. The project, referred to as UCN, is an international collaboration of groups from Canada and Japan, with a goal to provide the world's highest density of ultra-cold neutrons. Throughout the project, you will have the opportunity to utilize the Project Physicist as a liaison to act on any physics-based problems that may affect the project schedule, as well as work with other team members to plan and implement the UCN project.

As Project Manager, you will be primarily responsible for:

  • Initiating a planning and engagement process with team members and key stakeholders to develop and maintain a resource analysis
  • Creating and maintain the project plan, including consulting with all relevant stakeholders and incorporating lessons learned as the project progresses
  • Developing and documenting design concepts and engineering requirements with project scientists and engineers
  • Developing project management documents to successfully deliver project objectives
  • Ensuring the project is completed on time, on specification and on budget, and acting responsively to resolve any missed tasks or milestones
  • Working collaboratively with the Project Engineer to coordinate the engineering design, procurement and/or manufacture of components, assembly, installation and commissioning of the UCN apparatus
  • Fostering a sense of collaboration and teamwork, and working effectively with all stakeholders to achieve goals
  • Effectively chairing project meetings and periodically reporting progress to the project leadership and TRIUMF management at review meetings

While the position is dedicated to the UCN project, you will also have an opportunity to assist in achieving the broader mandate of the PMO and may also manage smaller TRIUMF projects. The initial contract will be for 2 year term, with the expectation of an extension to the end of the project, or reassignment to a new project.

If you are excited by the prospect of joining our PMO and managing this unique and exciting project, we encourage you to apply. During an interview you will be asked to elaborate to the hiring committee how your skills, training and experience match the following position requirements:

  • Forward thinking with strong problem solving skills, sound technical and management judgment, attention to detail, and prioritization
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Project and Excel
  • Proven documentation skills
  • Strong abilities in project planning, including resource estimations and developing appropriate performance indicators.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic environment to meet the high demands of a complex project.
  • Self-directed with strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills
  • Ability to work effectively in the face of ambiguity, shifting priorities and rapid change
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be flexible and able to work and communicate with scientists and project team members located in other time zones
  • A university degree from an accredited Canadian institution, preferably in science or engineering, or equivalent
  • A minimum of 5 - 7 years of project management experience with demonstrated results leading major projects

While not prerequisites, the following will be considered assets:

  • A PMP designation
  • Experience in physics experimentation, cryogenics or system engineering
  • Experience working in large-scale research installations
  • Experience with project management and system engineering in a highly multidisciplinary research environment
