Controller

We are currently looking for a designated accounting professional with a demonstrated ability to manage the accounting operations and financial systems (ERP) of TRIUMF, including the efficient delivery of accounting services, cash handling and banking operations, and commodity and payroll tax compliance. As Controller, you will also be fully responsible for providing timely and accurate financial reporting to users, and for ensuring that processing of transactions adhere to procedures and systems of internal control. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will manage and supervise a small team in a very busy, fast-paced and collaborative working environment. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing information to users on aspects of TRIUMF financial systems including the delivery of user training, and advising users on matters related to accounting procedures, financial reporting and information, and commodity and income tax compliance
  • Ensuring compliance of commodity and income tax rules, regulations or legislation and implementing relevant changes into TRIUMF's accounting system.
  • Advising stakeholders on the impact of CRA payroll tax rules and regulations; and coordinating the preparation and filling of T4, T4A and T4NR for payments processed by TRIUMF.
  • Ensuring accounting processes including AP, AR, General Ledger, Planner, Commitment Accounting, Workflow, and Cash and Banking are functioning effectively and are in compliance with procedures and systems of internal control. This includes the scheduling and timely completion of month ends, year ends, and budget processing activities.
  • Preparing timely and accurate cash flow projections to ensure TRIUMF's liquidity to fulfill payment obligations, including analysis and commitment of funds associated with foreign exchange hedging; and makes appropriate, timely investment decisions to maximize return on surplus in cash flow.
  • Coordinating and preparing annual financial statements including the scheduling of activities and auditor liaison; and preparing various financial and operational reports and analyses
  • Ensuring proper maintenance and dissemination of information flows including but not limited to Logistics and Procurement, monitoring processes and streamlining procedures as required. This includes the processing of financial transactions including settlement channels
  • Works with HR staff on payroll processing and reporting issues, and coordinates with IT staff with respect to finance system upgrades, system requirements and reporting.

  • Knowledge of GAAP
  • Knowledge of the auditing process and role of auditors
  • Knowledge of the Not-for-Profit sector, Charities, and Fund Accounting
  • Familiarity with agency funding, administration and expenditure policies and controls
  • Familiarity with commodity taxation and CRA payroll tax rules and regulations
  • Familiarity with cash management, investment and foreign exchange hedging
  • Good leadership, supervisory, coaching and teamwork skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to build and foster effective and collaborative working relationships with a broad and diverse group of individuals
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office and other related software, including familiarity with Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERP).
  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and a Canadian accounting designation (CPA, CA or CGA or CMA)
  • At least 10 years relevant experience with Not-for-Profit accounting, preferably in progressively senior roles
  • A minimum 5 years of supervisory experience

Note: Some knowledge or familiarity with Unit 4 Agresso (ERP) will be considered an asset.
