Competition # 593

Junior Engineering Physicist - 2 Year Term

TRIUMF is one of the leading accelerator centers worldwide exploring the structure of matter with a variety of accelerated particle beams. Our 500 MeV cyclotron provides the primary proton beams that are used for the majority of our research programs within our ISAC facility. ISAC is a rare isotope beam (RIB) production and acceleration facility with the highest power driver beam in the world, producing some of the most intense RIBs of certain species. Our Target and Ion Source group at TRIUMF specializes in the research and development of new types and intensities of these isotope beams. At present, a unique contract opportunity exists for an early career level engineer/physicist to conduct detailed mechanical and electrostatic analysis for a new target and target module, and to prepare technical documentation of findings, procedures, and engineering data. This position will provide you an opportunity to:

  • Establish engineering requirements for target module components and systems
  • Create and develop design concepts, specify components and detail the design for complex assemblies that require mechanical, thermal and electrostatic designs
  • Support in implementation and oversight of fabrication, installation and commissioning of target module system components
  • Conduct simulation and analysis of mechanical/thermal stresses and electrostatics, with radiation considerations
  • Perform failure analysis and reliability engineering such as fault tree and Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis
  • Produce documentation such as design notes, engineering notes, presentations, change orders, and design reviews
  • Perform hands-on work/floor engineering for maintenance and repair of equipment where remote handling techniques are employed

In-house radiation safety training will be provided to designate you as a TRIUMF "Nuclear Energy Worker."

If you are excited by the prospect of being part of this project and are looking to gain unique experience as you further develop your engineering physics career, we encourage you to apply! During an interview you will be asked to elaborate to the hiring committee how your skills, training and experience match the following position requirements, and that you have:

  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, engineering physics, integrated engineering, applied physics, or similar
  • While not require, some practical on the job experience is an asset
  • The ability to understand, synthesize, and clearly phrase a design problem
  • A firm grasp of applied physics and/or interdisciplinary engineering, including mechanical design, and knowledge of basic electrostatics and electricity
  • Mechanical engineering knowledge of stress analysis, fluids, heat transfer, thermal analysis, shock and vibration, numerical methods, and finite element analysis
  • A working knowledge of computer assisted simulation software and CAD such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, COMSOL, and Matlab
  • Hands-on experience with machining and assembly in a shop environment
  • Strong communication skills, planning abilities, and technical writing skills combined with the ability to work effectively as a productive team player
  • While not required, experience or knowledge of vacuum and radiation damage and previous exposure to high voltage systems will be considered a definite asset.

TRIUMF offers a creative, collaborative team environment working with brilliant individuals. We are located in Pacific Spirit Park in beautiful Vancouver, BC. On-site amenities include a café and secure bicycle storage.

This 2 year employment opportunity offers:

  • A comprehensive benefit plan, as well as a competitive junior engineer/physicist salary
  • An excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility
