Competition # 579

Scientific Computing Analyst - EH&S

TRIUMF is Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. We are an international centre for discovery and innovation, advancing fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research for science, medicine, and business. TRIUMF is as diverse in its areas of expertise, its people and cultures, as it is in its opportunities for career development, exploration, and growth. We are constantly seeking dynamic team players who thrive on creativity, collaboration, excellence in service, and a busy environment.

If you are seeking a new challenge that will further develop your Scientific Computing career, one which will allow you to make a difference, then you will be interested in joining our Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) team. This team is responsible for providing our management and staff with the tools and information necessary to minimize the impact of our operations on the environment, ensuring a healthy workforce and a safe workplace which enables TRIUMF to maintain excellence in scientific research.

You will be responsible for providing the scientific computing support necessary for hazard and safety analyses in radiation protection, as well as for supporting engineering design of high power targets, beam dumps, and beam line components. You will provide scientific analysis using Monte Carlo codes for the production and transport of energetic particles in materials associated with the bombardment by accelerated beams of protons and electrons. This analysis is required to address problems in several different areas:

  • Optimization of radiation shielding designs for accelerator facilities, making use of techniques to ensure sufficient statistical accuracy is achieved
  • Determination of power deposition in components as required for the thermal analysis
  • Assistance with material design for components to increase the longevity where radiation damage will occur, and/or optimize activation characteristics to limit dose exposure to personnel, and/or reduce the required decay time prior to decommissioning; and
  • Determination of activation product distributions for shielding materials and accelerator components, addressing ongoing clearance and disposal criteria within the constraints of the TRIUMF waste management program, and with respect to longer term storage and disposal strategies
In addition to the above, you will prepare documents, reports, and technical presentations; develop tools to convert Monte Carlo output data to the required formats for other analysis codes; maintain suites of FLUKA Monte Carlo software; and provide support to the TRIUMF FLUKA user community by disseminating information and providing instruction on new techniques and aspects of the code.

If this position excites you, and you have extensive experience with scientific computing on a Linux platform, including management and testing of code libraries; and experience with Monte Carlo code such as FLUKA for shielding and activation analysis, then we invite you to apply. Supplementing the above experience you will also have:

  • A demonstrated ability to employ other data analysis packages to display and interpret the output of Monte Carlo simulations
  • Excellent interpersonal, comprehension, interpretation, and oral and written communications skills
  • The ability to effectively train or instruct others
  • An advanced degree in physics plus several years of relevant additional training and/or experience.
  • Post-graduate experience working in a subatomic physics field, and a strong background in scientific computing
TRIUMF offers a creative, collaborative team environment working with brilliant individuals. We are located in Pacific Spirit Park on the campus of the University of British Columbia in beautiful Vancouver, BC. On-site amenities include a café and secure bicycle storage.

We offer:

  • A competitive hiring salary
  • A comprehensive and attractive benefits package; and
  • An excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility
While the position is open to all qualified applicants, in the case of equal qualifications, preference will be given to Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:
