Competition # 574

Production Assistant

More than a hundred Canadian researchers from across the country, including TRIUMF researchers, are collaborating on an international experiment called ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) near Geneva, Switzerland. The experiment is designed to help us find answers to the most fundamental questions about what the universe is made of and how it works. The TRIUMF-ATLAS group is involved in the construction of detection chambers, several of which need to be upgraded. TRIUMF's specific responsibility is to produce about 450 cathode boards over the next 1.5 years, with full production starting in spring 2017.

We are currently recruiting a junior level Production Assistant to join our team on a temporary project basis, and participate in all steps of the assembly of the cathode boards. If you are a detail orientated, safety and quality conscious team player looking to gain technical experience, this may be the right opportunity for you.

Responsibilities associated with the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Coating of cathode boards with an industrial flat-line spray machine
  • Precision gluing of chamber walls, spacer buttons, and wire supports
  • Quality assurance through precise thickness measurements and basic electrical conductivity tests
  • Quality control measurements are performed at each step and recorded in electronic database

Minimum qualifications include:

  • High school graduation with courses in mechanical or electrical technology. Preference given to applicants with a relevant technical diploma.
  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude with some experience in mechanical or assembly work
  • Commitment to quality assurance and a high attention to detail
  • MS Excel knowledge and experience
  • Basic skill and knowledge in the use of mechanical tools
  • Familiarity with the mechanical and/or electrical properties of materials considered an asset
  • Availability and clearance to travel to the main vendor of cathode boards in the USA is an asset
  • Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for the term of the contract
