Competition # 573

Mechanical Technician - 2 Year Term

TRIUMF is currently expanding with the construction of the Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) which will broaden TRIUMF's (and Canada's) capabilities to produce and study isotopes for physics and medicine. ARIEL will include a new high power electron linear accelerator as a driver for the production of rare isotopes via photo fission, and a second target for an additional proton beam line.

In support of the ARIEL project, we are recruiting 2 mechanical technicians who will provide temporary assistance in the assembly and installation of charged particle beam line systems, sub-systems, and associated services for the new facility. These positions are for a 2 year contract term, and will provide an opportunity to:

  • Prepare, assemble, install, and align the beam line components and associated services, which include compressed air, gaseous argon, gaseous nitrogen, cooling water, controls, and nuclear exhaust
  • Clean, install, and test vacuum system devices, and perform the operation, troubleshooting, and repair of the systems and related equipment
  • Inspect equipment to ensure quality standards and functionality
  • Assemble and ensure precise alignments of beam line components and related sub-systems using approved documentation and drawings

If you are excited by the prospect of being part of this project and are looking to gain unique experience as you further develop your technical career, we encourage you to apply. During an interview you will be asked to elaborate to the hiring committee how your skills, training and experience match the following position requirements, and that you have:

  • A diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology from a technical institute such as BCIT
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • A basic knowledge of electromagnetic properties combined with an understanding of high vacuum systems and technical drawings
  • A set of skills which include mechanical assembly, 3D alignment using laser tracker technology, and basic machining
  • A solid understanding of the mechanical systems and tools needed to clean, assemble, install, and align mechanical components to high degree of care and precision
  • High attention to detail and familiarity and knowledge of industrial safety principles

Education and/or experience in 3D Solidworks, lathe machining, milling machines, drill presses and assorted hand tools, and laser trackers will be considered an asset, as will a basic knowledge of vacuum technology, leak detections, and ultra-high vacuum cleaning and installation techniques.

This 2 year employment opportunity offers:

  • A comprehensive benefit plan, as well as a competitive junior to intermediate level salary
  • An excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility
