Accelerator Operator

Our Accelerator Complex is comprised of state of the art systems which include a 520 MeV Cyclotron which produces the primary proton beams used by a large fraction of the TRIUMF program; the TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility used to produce rare-isotope beams; a TR13 cyclotron used in the research and production of radioisotopes for medical purposes; the SRF e-linac and ARIEL RIB facility which will produce exotic isotopes in the near future.

In support of our Accelerator Operations, we are currently accepting applications to fill an entry level Operator position. The successful applicant will receive formal on-the-job training to join our existing team of dedicated and fully qualified Operators. Our operations run 24/7 and the position requires the Operator to work a rotating shift schedule, and be trained and designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

Once fully trained, your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Following well defined procedures to start up and operate accelerator systems and associated beamlines
  • Monitoring the particle source, beam transport and accelerator systems and making routine beam changes as required for optimal production
  • Monitoring ancillary system parameters important to the operation of the accelerator and responding to alarms
  • Making routine beam changes as required
  • Using prescribed troubleshooting procedures, identifying fault conditions, issuing fault reports, solving problems within scope, and contacting system experts for advice when needed
  • Documentation of activities in an electronic logbook
  • Issuing work authorizations for approved maintenance activities
  • Assisting with site security and emergency response activities where applicable, and within job scope
Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:
  • Good mechanical and electrical aptitudes, coupled with strong problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team
  • Very strong listening, oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to build effective relationships
  • Graduation from a relevant engineering technology program at a technical college such as mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, or robotics; or the equivalent in a combination of relevant education, training and experience..
  • Familiarity with accelerator control applications, LINUX OS, PERL programming and other LINUX scripting languages will be considered a definite asset
