Electronics Technician(x2)

Our Science Technology Department contributes to the design, development, and construction of advanced detectors for diverse applications. The roots of this activity lie in the development of detectors for particle, astroparticle, and nuclear physics, and also support advanced detector development for molecular and materials sciences and nuclear medicine.

To enable rapid development of custom electronics solutions by our Electronics Development and Detector Electronics teams, we are currently accepting applications to fill 2 temporary positions which will support the development of electronics systems/embedded electronics systems for radiation detectors and beam monitoring systems.Both positions are offered for a 2 year contract.   • A diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology from a technical college or institute such as BCIT, or the equivalent in education and experience
  • At least 3 years of relevant, practical work experience
Position a): Embedded Systems - FPGA Developer
The main focus is the development of firmware for Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) on custom electronics boards developed at TRIUMF. The firmware is used for all data communication and for controlling and reading out custom Application Specific Integrated Circuits and commercial ICs such as Analog to Digital Converters. Key areas of responsibility:
  • Develop firmware for TRIUMF custom electronics boards
  • Develop test firmware for prototype and evaluation boards
  • Contribute to the firmware development infrastructure
  • Contribute to the interface between the firmware and the data acquisition software
    Skill Requirements:
  • Experience in C/C++ or similar programming languages
  • Experience in programming embedded systems, preferably FPGA programming an asset
  • Good knowledge of digital and analog electronics
  • Familiar with electronics instruments, measurement techniques and laboratory practices
  • Some experience in use of PCB design/layout (especially ALTIUM) is an asset
Position b): PCB Electronics Technician
The main focus is on Printed Circuit Board design, fabrication and testing. The incumbent is expected to take responsibility for large scale production of boards, including quality assurance once their functionalities have been validated. Key areas of responsibility:
  • Design Printed Circuit Boards
  • Oversee the production of Printed Circuit Boards (at external commercial outfits)
  • Oversee electronics part procurement and PCB assembly (at external commercial outfits)
  • Oversee QA of PCBs including the development of test procedures and test infrastructure
    Skill Requirements:
  • Good knowledge of analog and digital electronics
  • Proficient in use of PCB design/layout, knowledge of ALTIUM is an asset
  • Familiar with electronics instruments, measurement techniques and laboratory practices

  • The ability to legally work in Canada
