Postdoc RIB High Energy Beam Development

TRIUMF , Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics, is one of the leading accelerator centers worldwide exploring the structure of matter with a variety of accelerated particle beams. The 500 MeV cyclotron provides the primary proton beams that are used for the majority of TRIUMFs research programs, which consists of molecular and materials science, nuclear medicine, and nuclear physics and astrophysics within our ISAC facility . ISAC is a rare isotope beam (RIB) production and acceleration facility with the highest power driver beam in the world, producing some of the most intense RIBs of certain species. TRIUMF is currently expanding with the construction of the Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) which will broaden TRIUMFs (and Canadas) capabilities to produce and study isotopes for physics and medicine. ARIEL will include a new high power electron linear accelerator as a driver for the production of rare isotopes via photo fission, and a second target for an additional proton beam line.

In support of these initiatives, we have an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher who will join our Beam Delivery & Development Group on a 2 year contract term. The primary focus of the position will be to optimize the acceleration of rare isotope beams at ISAC. You will assist in choosing the accelerator configuration suitable for the desired energy and isotopes, and perform measurements to assure the beam properties required by the experiments are met. You will also assist in the maintenance and development of existing and future High Level Applications designed to facilitate the operation. Your specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing and actively assisting ISAC operations
  • Taking responsibility for high energy beam tuning and delivery, including operator training
  • Performing beam optics simulations for the transport of rare isotopes through the post accelerator at ISAC
  • Developing and maintain software tools for high energy beam tuning, and designing new equipment as required to support accelerated beam capability
  • Documenting and publishing your results, and collaborating internationally with other labs
Our ideal candidate is a highly motivated, effective team player with a recent PhD in accelerator physics or related experimental physics, with previous experience working in a similar laboratory research environment. In addition, you will have an appropriate knowledge of particle beam dynamics and linear accelerators and the associated hardware of heavy ion accelerators for room temperature and superconducting structures. You must also be familiar with modern programming techniques and control systems. Basic knowledge of nuclear physics to understand production mechanisms and properties of radioactive ions is essential, as are strong oral and written communication skills which enable effective teamwork and collaboration.

Please note that this position will require you to have the flexibility to occasionally work irregular hours and/or weekends, and to be trained in-house and designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker

This term position offers an attractive health benefits package and a starting salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. When submitting your application as detailed below, please include a detailed CV with a list of publications, and arrange for 3 letters of recommendation or references to be sent directly to the email below.

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:
