Competition # 552

Physicist - Targets & Ions Sources

Our 500 MeV cyclotron provides the primary proton beams that are currently used for the majority of TRIUMFs research programs, which consists of molecular and materials science, nuclear medicine, and nuclear physics and astrophysics. ISAC is a rare isotope beam (RIB) production and acceleration facility with the highest power driver beam in the world, producing some of the most intense RIBs of certain species. TRIUMF is currently expanding to construct the Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) which will expand TRIUMFs (and Canadas) capabilities to produce and study isotopes for physics and medicine. ARIEL will include a new high-power electron linear accelerator as a second driver for the production of rare isotopes via photo fission, and a second target receiving 500 MeV protons from an additional proton beam line.

In support of these activities, our Targets and Ion Sources Department has an immediate opening for a Physicist who will develop and model ARIEL isotope production targets and the corresponding ion source systems, as well as the new ARIEL electron photofission and proton target stations. As the successful applicant, you will also have the opportunity to guide a development team and play a leading role in transferring experiences from ISAC and other operating ISOL systems world-wide to the design of high-power actinide targets for electron induced photofission, as well as the development of a new proton beam driven target station at ARIEL. You will also take part in the operation and development of targets and ion sources at the existing ISAC facility, participate in the development and integration of a target module refurbishment strategy, and contribute to the ISAC/ARIEL ramp-up.

If the scope of this opportunity excites you, here are some more hands on specifics you will be performing:

  • Conduct simulations to model and optimize photo-converter target configurations for e-linac driven radioisotope production in order to derive a prototype target ion source system for radioactive ion beam production at ARIEL.
  • Integrate the optimized target, converter and ion source design into the ARIEL target station and take leadership in the target ion source front end design.
  • Draft project plans and schedules in order to support project management activities assuring finalization of the ARIEL target station project within time and budget.
  • Participate in the development of new target configurations for ISAC by supplying expert input to existing concepts or by initiating new R&D projects.
  • Create and maintain quality documents for targets and ions sources specifications, design and operation.
  • Report scientific results at relevant conferences and publish in refereed journals.
Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:
  • General knowledge of experimental nuclear physics, ion optics and beam-matter interaction
  • Spallation and fission target materials and ISOL target technology.
  • Design and development of ion sources.
  • Specific knowledge in the areas of simulation software packages (MCNP, FLUKA, EGS, etc.) and CAD software (SolidWorks) would enhance the effectiveness of the work in the position.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good computer and electronics skills and an understanding of mechanical design principles, vacuum techniques and beam instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated initiative, self-motivation and attention to detail are essential for this key project for the realization of the ARIEL facility.
  • Experience in managing scientific or engineering project is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse and varying backgrounds and education levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills that are consistent in strength and credibility.
  • An advanced degree in experimental nuclear, applied physics, material science or chemistry or equivalent and at least 8 years of experience in a related field preferable at an ISOL facility.
Job Factors:
  • Some international travel may be required.
  • Occasional work outside of regular hours.
  • Occasional work in radiation environments requires on-site radiation safety training, and designation as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.
The position offers the following:
  • An attractive benefit package including health, dental, pension and vacation.
  • A competitive hiring salary commensurate with experience and scope of responsibility.
  • An excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility.
