Competition # 538

Research Scientist - Theory

Located on the south campus of the University of British Columbia, TRIUMF is Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. We are an international centre for discovery and innovation, advancing fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research for science, medicine, and business, and attracting roughly 500 experimental faculty researchers, postdoctoral researchers and students annually.

TRIUMF is as diverse in its areas of expertise, its people and its cultures, as it is in its opportunities for career development, exploration, and growth. We are constantly seeking dynamic individuals who thrive on creativity, collaboration, and excellence in service, and are currently accepting applications for a Research Scientist who will join our Theory Department and become actively involved in the targeted fields of theoretical particle physics.

You will be joining a Department that engages in forefront research in subatomic physics, that provides guidance for the TRIUMF experimental program, and which is a centre of activity for the broader Canadian subatomic theory community. The research interests within the Theory Department include particle phenomenology, neutrino physics, nuclear theory, nuclear astrophysics, and lattice gauge theory.

As a Theory Research Scientist, you will have the opportunity to engage in forefront research, developing proposals and obtaining research support from national and international funding agencies. You will keep abreast of the advancements in the field of theoretical physics and act as an expert for TRIUMF experimenters active in projects including LHC ATLAS / T2K / UCN / ALPHA, and provide guidance for future directions. In addition, you will be expected to provide effective supervision of Postdoctoral Research Fellows and graduate students, to take an active role in the organization of workshops, and to participate in a variety of activities or events that connect the Theory Department to the overall TRIUMF research program.

As the ideal candidate, you will have a PhD in theoretical particle physics or the equivalent, and a broad knowledge of theoretical physics tools, methods and literature. You have an outstanding record of publications and public presentations; you are attentive to the most recent developments in the field, and your communication and interpersonal skills are both strong and effective. Particle theorists with expertise in high-energy collider phenomenology, neutrino physics, or lower-energy precision experiments would thrive in this role. While the scope of the position is targeting candidates at a career level equivalent to that of an assistant professor at a university, in exceptional cases, more experienced candidates may also be considered.

This is a full time Board Appointed position leading to a continuing appointment within 5 years, and is considered equivalent to a faculty position at a Canadian university. A Board Appointment enables you to apply for NSERC and other peer-reviewed funding opportunities. The position includes eligibility to hold adjunct professor status at a number of associated universities including, but not limited to, any of the 19 member universities that govern TRIUMF.

We offer excellent benefit plans, and a competitive hiring salary commensurate with experience.

When submitting application as outlined below, please also include a statement of research accomplishments, interests and future plans, a list of publication, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted by email before the application deadline.

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:
