Competition # 482

Research Scientist-Nuclear Physics with Ion Traps

Located on the South Campus of the University of British Columbia, TRIUMF is Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics. Our Physical Sciences Division is currently accepting applications for a Research Scientist who will join the Nuclear Physics Department and participate in the existing TITAN (Triumf's Ion Trap for Nuclear and Atomic science) facility science program. The facility is used for experiments with rare isotopes from the ISAC facility and in the near future from ARIEL. ISAC (Isotope Separator and ACcelerator) and ARIEL (Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory, starting operation in 2018) are major on-line isotope separator facilities for the production of short-lived rare isotopes with currently the highest power on production target capabilities.

The current science program at TITAN includes fundamental nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, and tests of symmetries and neutrino-physics. The program at TITAN is unique in multiple ways, including mass measurements of the shortest-lived species with ion traps, measurements with highly charged ions, and in-trap spectroscopy with Si(Li) and HPGe detectors. The TITAN facility consists at the moment of 3 ion traps; a radio-frequency quadrupole RFQ cooler and buncher, a charge-breeding electron beam ion trap (EBIT), and a Penning trap. We are currently commissioning a Penning trap, used to sympathetically cool highly-charged radioactive isotopes, and a multi-reflection time-of-flight (MR-TOF) isobar separator. Both units will be integrated into the existing system within 2016. The TITAN facility is operated by an international collaboration, with strong Canadian contributions.

The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in the collaboration to further optimization, possible expansion, and exploitation of the TITAN facility at TRIUMF. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Scientific leadership in the field of rare-isotope physics using ion traps, and maintains an effective and visible scientific program
  • Interacting with the international and Canadian community to foster further collaboration Participation in strategic planning for the division by providing input toward the scientific goals and strategies of the Physical Sciences Division
  • Ensuring that the safety and quality standards of TRIUMF experiments are consistent with the TRIUMF standard operating procedures
  • Maintaining own research projects, and applying for, or participating in, National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) or other funding grants
  • Directly supervising postdoc, graduate, and undergraduate students, and overseeing the work of technical personnel
We encourage you to explore this opportunity further if you have:
  • Research-specific knowledge that includes a Ph.D in particle, nuclear, or atomic physics, and at least 5 years of related experience
  • Strong interest in rare-isotope physics and experience with ion trap design and operation
  • Critical scientific thought and effective experimental strategy
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, excellent relationship building talent, and effective problem solving skills
  • Experience with beamlines, ion-optics, single particle detectors, X-ray and gamma detectors, and project management is an asset
This is a full time Board Appointed term position leading to a continuing appointment after 5 years, and is considered equivalent to a faculty position at a Canadian university. This designation enables you to apply for NSERC and other peer-reviewed funding opportunities. The position includes eligibility to hold adjunct professor status at a number of associated universities including, but not limited to, any of the 19 member universities that govern TRIUMF. We offer a comprehensive benefits package and a competitive starting salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

All qualified applicants will be given serious consideration, and in the case of equal qualifications, preference will be given to a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.

When submitting applications (as per instructions below), please also include a statement of research accomplishments and interests, and arrange for at least 3 referees to submit reference letters directly to the email contact below.

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:

Applications will be accepted until 2016-04-12
