TRIUMF is currently looking for a Buyer to join the Procurement team and purchase commodities and services in a specialized procurement activity. The scope of the position includes the continuous effort to improve operations and costs, to decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and to provide quality customer service.

Key areas of responsibility are in the purchasing and expediting of appropriate commodities in a timely and cost effective way. This involves, but is not limited to:

  • reviewing requests and interacting with vendors
  • examining price, suitability, and availability of items or services; researching products
  • comparing specifications and reviewing alternatives to fulfill TRIUMF objectives
  • evaluating invitations to bid
  • problem and complaint resolution
  • advising and guiding end-users in Purchasing decisions
  • mastering ERP system (AGRESSO) to improve buying efficiencies
  • may be assigned special projects involving highly technical specifications
  • may be assigned overflow work from the Procurement Group Leader
  • An understanding of Supply Chain Management processes
  • A thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of centralized purchasing, the national standards of purchasing methods, and a solid understanding of the entire supply chain process
  • Familiarity with the assigned commodities including sources of supplies, commodity markets, price trends, grades, and qualities
  • Solid understanding of common business practices relating to the purchase, pricing, terms, shipment, taxes, and payment for commodities and services must be demonstrated in order to be effective
  • Understanding of contract administration
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills
  • Excellent oral and written English communication, comprehension and interpretation skills
  • Demonstrated experience working with ERP systems used in managing business processes
  • Good working knowledge of the internet and internet sourcing
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel and Word)
  • Fast learner with good numerical reasoning and analytical ability, and inherent attentiveness to detail, and the ability to multi-task and deal with changing priorities
  • Strong relationship building and people skills to foster co-operation between diverse groups; the ability to work as an effective team member
  • Legally able to work in Canada (Citizen or Permanent Resident)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • University degree or the equivalent in training and experience
  • 5 + years experience as a Buyer
  • SCMP/ CPPB certification.
  • Proven history taking initiative and delivering improvements
