Competition # 416

Controls Engineer

TRIUMF, Canada's National Research Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics, is one of the leading accelerator centers worldwide exploring the structure of matter with a variety of accelerated particle beams.

At present, we are accepting applications for a Controls Engineer who will be an integral part of our Safety Systems Group (SSG). This group is responsible for functional requirements, conceptual design and regulatory compliance for Radiation Safety Systems (RSS). These systems protect personnel from radiation due to accelerator operation and generally consist of at least two separate sub-systems: an Access Control Interlock System (ACIS) to keep people away from areas where prompt radiation levels are expected to be high during accelerator operation and a Radiation Monitoring System (RMS) to measure and limit prompt radiation levels in accessible areas outside shielding and barriers.

In this challenging career position you will have the overall opportunity to design, implement and maintain software applications and hardware infrastructure and to provide general software systems management in support of other Environmental Health and Safety activities. As a member of the team you will:

  • Liaise with designers, end users and group members to develop functional requirements for new safety systems
  • Design and specify interfaces to implement end user requirements such as displays, alarms and data-logging utilities for all radiation safety systems
  • Collaborate with other SSG members in the calibration of existing radiation detectors
  • Design and implement proposals for upgrading old radiation safety system hardware and software
  • Prepare related budget, scheduling and testing documentation
  • Prepare system operating instructions and deliver training
  • Prepare system design documentation for regulatory agencies and present for approval in internal Design Reviews
  • Develop and maintain a Concurrent Version file management system for the SSG
  • Collaborate in the preparation of schematic diagrams and in the physical wiring of system interfaces

As the ideal candidate, you will offer:

  • fluency in standard programming languages (C, C++, etc.), real time control systems, operating systems (linux, WINDOWS), networking concepts, and in basic database management
  • knowledge of, or the aptitude to learn EPICS, the set of software tools used to create real time control systems for particle accelerators
  • excellent trouble shooting skills and the ability to provide suggestions and solutions for problems
  • strong technical writing skills supported by a good understanding of scientific terminology
  • flexibility and the ability to work under pressure and within time constraints
  • advanced oral and written communication skills and the ability to make effective presentations
  • effective interpersonal and relationship building skills the ability to integrate across all levels of the organization and with all variety of clients
  • knowledge of, or the aptitude to learn, the principles and instrumentation used in radiation detection and/or an understanding of radiation protection and dose limits
  • a BSc in electronics or software engineering from an accredited engineering program and at least 7 years of relevant experience beyond the graduation level, or the equivalent combination of training and experience the ability to work legally in Canada
In the case where candidates demonstrate equal qualifications, preference will be given to the Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents.

In addition to the following, TRIUMF offers a unique environment to work in, and this is an excellent opportunity to further enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility:
