Cyclotron Operator

TRIUMF, Canada's National Research Facility for Particle and Nuclear Physics, is a leading accelerator based research laboratory in Canada. It is renowned for its diverse program in a wide range of physics and nuclear medicine. Our Applied Technology Group (ATG) is comprised of several work teams including Isotope Production, Cyclotron Operations, and Technical Support. This group focuses on the production of radioactive isotopes for use by Nordion, a global life sciences company that provides products and services that are used in the development of drugs and diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Currently the ATG is accepting applications for a Cyclotron Operator who will join a team of Operators responsible for the safe operation of its isotope production cyclotrons, and for the associated maintenance and repair activities.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Safe operation of all accelerators, target stations, the target transfer system and subsystems in the isotope production facilities.
  • Safe operation of the building control system and the nuclear ventilation.
  • Troubleshooting, maintenance and repairs of cyclotron systems and related equipment.
  • Performing safety related functions (surveys) as required.
  • Documentation as it relates to the operation of the isotope production facility.
  • Projects to improve the reliability and performance of equipment.
Safety awareness, good technical knowledge of accelerator systems and analytical skills are required for this position. The ideal Operator will have a technical background in one or more of the science or engineering disciplines with very good communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills, as well as an ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Flexibility to deal with changing priorities and systematic, reliable response to critical situations are essential. The willingness and flexibility to work a rotating shift is a must. BCIT diploma in an applicable discipline and at least one year of relevant experience preferably in accelerator operations, or a combination of equivalent education and experience with electro-mechanical systems. Preference will be given to both qualified technologists and undergraduates, especially those with demonstrated mechanical and or electronics aptitudes.

Our Operators are required to take an in-house TRIUMF Radiation Protection Training course necessary to receive the designation of Nuclear Energy Worker. The next course is scheduled for mid-January 2014.
