Competition # 365

POSTDOC - Mass Separator Design

Located in Vancouver on the south campus of the University of British Columbia, TRIUMF is Canada's national research facility for particle and nuclear physics. Construction is currently underway to build a new flagship facility for TRIUMF that will expand Canada's capabilities to produce and study isotopes for physics and medicine. This project, ARIEL (Advanced Rare Isotope Laboratory) is designed to enhance and expand TRIUMF's rare-isotope production capabilities by up to 200% (in the fullness of time). Phase-I has been funded and includes the construction of conventional facilities and the first stage of a high-power electron linear accelerator (e-linac) using superconducting radio-frequency cavities. Additional phases of ARIEL will add two full target stations and an additional proton beam line from TRIUMF's main cyclotron.

At this time, we have an immediate opening for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to oversee the design of the new High Resolution Separator (HRS) required for ARIEL. Specifically, the Postdoc will be responsible for the beam optics design as well as the detailed design of the separator magnets, and the translation of the physics requirements into a realistic engineering design. The position also offers the opportunity to supervise a graduate student.

As the successful candidate you will have the appropriate theoretical knowledge including higher order beam transport, and will be familiar with optics design codes, particularly COSY-infinity. In addition, you will be familiar with mass separation techniques and beam diagnostic. Your ability to supervise and mentor will also enable you to effectively utilize your grad student.

Our ideal candidate is a highly motivated, effective team player, with a recent PhD in an accelerator physics discipline, and preferably some previous experience working in a similar research lab environment. Familiarity with magnet design codes such as OPERA will be considered a definite asset.

This position is being offered for an 18 month term, and is open to all qualified candidates. TRIUMF is a unique place to work and this is an excellent opportunity to further enhance your research career in a world class research facility. You wont want to miss this chance to be a team contributor on this high profile project. Apply now.

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:
