ISAC Detector and Target Physicist

TRIUMF is Canada's national research laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, and is located on the south campus of the University of British Columbia. We are currently accepting applications for a Detector and Target Physicist who will join our Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) science group. . Using sound judgment when problem solving, and following established safety and maintenance procedures you will plan and set-up accelerator based experiments, including detector and target systems within the ISAC rare beam facility.

Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • plan and set-up accelerator based experiments, including detector and target systems, such as high purity Germanium detector or cryogenic targets
  • set-up, trouble-shooting, and operation of vacuum and/or high vacuum systems; and operation of gaseous targets or detectors
  • troubleshooting of electrical and electronic nuclear detector and nuclear data acquisition systems
  • plan, manage, and complete large-scale maintenance or upgrade projects for gamma, beta, or neutron detector systems
  • respond to incidents that compromise experimental accelerator beam-time; this may include after-hours response.
  • plan and perform ongoing maintenance and upgrades to experimental nuclear detector facilities
  • provide technical oversight to other team member and to mentor students
  • oversight of work being carried out by technologists
  • light industrial, mechanical and electrical tasks as required
You will need:
  • A graduate degree in engineering physics, nuclear or particle physics/chemistry, with at least 5 years of practical experience, or the equivalent in advanced technical training with relevant work experience that translates into ability.
  • a solid understanding of the operating principles of accelerator based nuclear experiments, in particular vacuum and cryogenic systems, detector and target systems
  • a basic knowledge of electronic, electrical systems and data-acquisition.
  • Good analytical and troubleshooting skills and the ability to apply physics to problem solving.
  • Good communications skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • The position requires the incumbent to take the TRIUMF in-house training course to be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.
