Competition # 327

Research Scientist - Fundamental Physics (UCN)

Located on the South Campus of the University of British Columbia, TRIUMF is Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics. We are currently accepting applications for a Research Scientist who will join our Particle Physics Group. The driving motivation behind our particle physics experiments is the desire to uncover the true nature of fundamental forces and particles.

The successful candidate will be expected to focus on the construction of the facility for Ultra Cold Neutrons (UCN) and its exploitation. Specifically, he/she will be expected to lead the ultra-cold neutron (UCN) program, including the initial experiment to study the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron. Construction of the UCN facility at TRIUMF is supported by an international collaboration mainly from Canada and Japan. The UCN source is being developed at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics in Japan, and will be relocated to TRIUMF in early 2015. The neutron EDM experiment is also presently being developed in Japan. The new UCN facility is expected to be a world-leading facility. The key goal is for the incumbent to bring their research program to world-class status by innovating and pursuing relevant technology that advances the field of fundamental neutron physics.

Qualification for the position include a Ph.D. and a distinguished research record including post-doctoral or faculty experience in particle, nuclear or atomic physics, with a strong interest in fundamental physics using UCN. Experience with beam-lines and cryogenics will be considered an asset. Additional requirements include strong group and scientific leadership skills, the ability to analyze and interpret data, and excellent communications skills, both oral and written. This is a full time Research Scientist position approved by TRIUMF's board of directors, and typically leading to continuing status after 5 years. The position is considered equivalent to a faculty position at a Canadian university, and as such the incumbent is eligible to apply for peer-reviewed funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The position is further enabled by the eligibility to obtain adjunct professor status at a number of associated universities including, but not limited to, any of the 17 member universities that govern TRIUMF. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

The position is open to all qualified applicants, and in the case of equal qualifications, preference may be given to a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident. When submitting application as outlined below, please also include a statement of research accomplishments and interests, and a list of publications.

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:
