Power Supply Engineer
TRIUMF, Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics, is currently recruiting to fill a new junior level Power Supply Engineer position. The primary function of the position is to provide support for power supply engineering, troubleshooting, hands-on maintenance, repair, and operations duties. Secondary functions include cost analysis, design, system definition and commissioning of new installations, as well as oversight of TRIUMF's vault cabling replacement project.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- monitoring power supplies performance, troubleshooting, repairing faulty equipment, and supporting maintenance activities.
- provide recommendations to the group leader for possible equipment upgrade, component selection, and maintenance duties to be done.
- contribute to the new facilities design, procurement and installation.
- monitor work safety as well as system safety and takes appropriate action such as alerting the group leader of any deficiencies observed.
- maintains relevant documentation.
- oversees the cyclotron vault re-cabling project and coordinates all relevant activities with other groups involved.
The incumbent must have good knowledge of DC power conversion technology, both theoretical and practical, including series pass regulated supplies, shunt regulated supplies and high frequency switch mode supplies of various topologies. A good understanding of electrical simulation software is required, as is practical knowledge of electrical schematic CAD software. Good practical hands on skills and a deep understanding of components at a level which will enable the incumbent to be able to specify replacement parts for obsolete items. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary as is the ability to interact effectively with suppliers of equipment to ensure that TRIUMF requirements are met. To be effective in the position, the incumbent will need to develop a good knowledge of cable properties relevant to TRIUMF applications. Minimum qualifications include a BSc in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and between 2 and 5 years experience in high power electronics including direct experience with DC power supplies, or the equivalent in a combination of education, training and experience. The position requires the incumbent to take an in-house radiation training course to be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker. All applicants must be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with APEGBC.
