TRIUMF Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics STUDENT JOB PROGRAM Summer 2020 job posting Job number TR20-2-31 | ||
---|---|---|
Position Title:Medical Isotope Target Research Assistant | ||
Name of Project:Ac-225 production target development | ||
Overview:Recent results have demonstrated outstanding potential for alpha-emitting radionuclides, such as actinium-225 (Ac-225) to treat advanced, metastatic cancers. TRIUMF has previously developed and irradiated thorium targets on its main beamline for the production of Ac-225. However, the existing target design and irradiations have been limited by available thorium supplies and by information regarding beam parameters inside TRIUMF's Isotope Production Facility (IPF) target station. As demand for TRIUMF’s Ac-225 increases, high-mass thorium targets and a more accurate understanding of the beam parameters inside IPF will be required to safely and cost-effectively increase TRIUMF’s Ac-225 production capacity. | ||
Duties:The successful candidate will assist in target development including the design, modelling, and documentation of thicker thorium targets. Additionally, beam profile monitors for the IPF will be developed that apply optical fibres recently developed as part of other Life Sciences experiments. If the design is successful he/she will be involved in publishing the results. | ||
Skills learned during this work experience:Basic knowledge in medical physics and isotope production will be acquired, as will familiarity with specialized software applications for thermodynamic modelling, mechanical modelling, and Monte Carlo simulations. Mechanical skills, drawing skills, design skills, writing skills, and project management skills will be improved or learned. | ||
Qualifications:The successful candidate must have a background in engineering physics, engineering, or physics. Experience in mechanical assembly and familiarity with applications such as SolidWorks, ANSYS CFX, ANSYS Mechanical, FLUKA, or MATLAB are considered an asset. | ||
Shiftwork required:No | ||
Period of work:May - Aug 2020 with possible 4-month extension | ||
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we
