Position Title:Superconducting RF (SRF) Development Student
Name of Project:Temperature and Magnetic Field Mapping for Coaxial SRF Resonator
Overview:The TRIUMF SRF group is engaged in on-going development to improve the performance of SRF cavities for linear accelerator application. Coaxial test cavities are used to characterize a variety of heat and doping treatments to lead to optimized treatments. Improved diagnostics would lead to deeper understanding. In particular precise knowledge of surface temperature and magnetic field level are essential components of such a study. The student project will involve the design of a temperature and magnetic field mapping system to be applied to our coaxial test resonators.
Duties:To address these questions the student will:(1) design a T-map and H-map diagnostic tool for the coaxial resonators (2) design a data acquisition system for the diagnostic tool (3) write a proposal with costing for the T-map and H-map system
Skills learned during this work experience:In total the R&D efforts of the RF/SRF group are ideally suited for undergraduate participation with professional, PhD student and post-doc supervision. The student will become familiar with general RF superconductivity, cavity processing and testing, temperature and magnetic sensors and data acquisition electronics systems.
Qualifications:Student after 3 university terms for Physics, Engineering/Physics. The job would benefit from some experience with mechanical and electronics assembly. RF and Solidworks/Labview/Matlab experience would be an asset.
Shiftwork required:No
Period of work:May-August 2020 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we
welcome applications from all qualified undergraduate students as defined below:
Applications must be received at TRIUMF by 4:00pm Pacific time on 2020-01-26.
