Position Title:Undergraduate Research Assistant - Laser Applications Group
Name of Project:Laser ionization saturation measurement system - design & prototype an automated system
Overview:For radioactive ion beam production a laser resonance ionization ion source provides element selective ionization. Each element requires a specific, multi step laser ionization scheme, which is characterized by laser wavelength and saturation intensity. For the characterization of the laser ionization scheme and laser beam transport saturation measurements for each laser excitation step are required, where the ion yield is measured as a function of the applied laser power. This project seeks to develop and implement an automated system to perform this measurement task.
Duties:Design, prototype, test and document a laser saturation measurement system as part of the laser applications group.Take part in the laser applications group development and beam delivery tasks as part of a well rounded training in laser ion source development and operation at a large scale nuclear physics research facility.
Skills learned during this work experience:Laser optics, laser beam transport, laser resonance ionization, ion optics, work documentation and project management. Basic instrument interfacing, instrument control, basic data acquisition and data representation. Basic programming in C or Python (explicitly no labview).Interfacing with different technical groups and experts.
Qualifications:Course work in the physical sciences and/or engineering. A liking to hands on work with instrumentation and a willingness to learn and acquire knowledge in new areas of engineering and science, in particular instrument control, data acquisition, as well as data representation and programming measurement routines.Good documentation skills.
Shiftwork required:Yes
Period of work:4 months with possible extension with possible 4-month extension
