Position Title:TITAN Coop Student
Name of Project:Building a second-generation electron gun for quantum ion manipulation
Overview:TITAN is a world-leader in precision mass measurements of radioactive species. By combining atomic-, nuclear-, and accelerator-physics techniques, we can manipulate a single ion or a cloud in a fraction of a second, leading to high-precision and -accuracy Penning trap mass spectrometry. These measurements allow us to investigate how stars evolve, why the nucleus sticks together, and the limits of the Standard Model. Still higher precision can be achieved by stripping electrons from the radioactive ions in the Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT).The EBIT traps radioactive ions and then uses a high-energy electron beam produced by an electron gun to successively knock off bound electrons. A second-generation gun has been designed and will be machined this spring. The student will assist in the commissioning of the new gun and its characterization. In addition, the student will participate in all on-line experiments, leading to publications in international, peer-reviewed journals.
Duties:The student will assist in the cleaning and assembly of the new electron gun following TITAN ultra-high-vacuum procedures, its installation, the conditioning of the cathode, and verification of the the new gun performance. Other EBIT-related tasks may include setup of evaporative cooling, analysis of charge-state distributions, and emittance measurements. The individual will participate in physics discussions on technical and scientific matters.
Skills learned during this work experience:The student will learn about- the physics motivation for atomic mass measurements - charge breeding for accelerator and nuclear physics - the operation and control of a complex research facility - electrostatic beam optics - ion detection systems - high-voltage systems - strong magnetic fields - ultra-high vacuum procedures and protocols
Qualifications:The incumbent should- have completed one semester of upper-division electromagnetism - be familiar with a programming language - possess strong communication and organizational skills - value teamwork
Shiftwork required:Yes
Period of work:4 mo extension possible within TITAN with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
