Summer 2020 job posting
Job number TR20-2-10

Position Title:

Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy Undergraduate Research Assistant

Name of Project:

Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy at ISAC

Overview:

Our group studies the behaviour of exotic, short-lived, artificially produced isotopes. For these experiments, we maintain a state-of-the-art gamma-ray detector array, TIGRESS (TRIUMF-ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape Suppressed Spectrometer). It consists of custom-built semiconductor and inorganic scintillator gamma-ray detectors. This equipment requires frequent reconfiguration, preventative maintenance and repair for efficient operation. A major goal for this year is to perform a campaign of experiments measuring properties of exotic nuclei in conjunction with the EMMA recoil spectrometer.

Duties:

The first general duty of the candidate shall be to assist in the execution of TIGRESS experiments at EMMA. This will primarily involve calibrating detectors, taking shifts on experiments, and performing first-pass analysis of data. The candidate will also become involved in detectors testing, repairing and re-installing sectors, and other duties as they arise.

The second general duty shall be to operate and improve on heavy-ion gas detectors that are used to diagnose ISAC beams. One device, the TBragg detector, measured beam composition down a special beam line. A new device, the TRIFIC counter, measures the beam after it has passed through the TIGRESS focal point. It is being upgraded for position sensitivity. The candidate will be involved in electronics assembly, testing, and operation of the TRIFIC counter off-line in anticipation of its uses in-beam in 2020.

Skills learned during this work experience:

Nuclear structure; Fundamentals of nuclear radiation; radiation measurement; signal transmission and processing; electromechanical interfaces

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: The successful candidate shall have a minimum of 2 terms of physical science (physics. chemistry, engineering physics, etc.)

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Through coursework, extracurricular activity, or work or life experience, the candidate shall demonstrate more than one of the following abilities: to assemble electrical, mechanical or structural systems; to work with delicate equipment; to troubleshoot simple electrical and electronic systems; to write, modify, and debug complex computer codes in object-oriented languages in general and C++ in particular; to develop code in a collaborative environment.

IN ADDITION: Other experience relevant to this position includes electronic assembly (soldering, antistatic practices, clean rooms), other fine assembly jobs, cryogenics, vacuum or turbine systems, cranes, the Root analysis package. Occasional off-hours shift work during experiments is encouraged but not mandatory.

Shiftwork required:

No

Period of work:

Normal office hours with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
