Position Title:Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy Undergraduate Technical Assistant | ||

Overview:Our group studies the behaviour of exotic, short-lived, artificially produced isotopes. For these experiments, we maintain two state-of-the-art gamma-ray detector array, TIGRESS (TRIUMF-ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape Suppressed Spectrometer). It consists of commercial, custom-built semiconductor and inorganic scintillator gamma-ray detectors. This equipment requires frequent reconfiguration, preventative maintenance and repair for efficient operation. A major goal for this year is to perform a campaign of experiments in conjunction with the EMMA recoil spectrometer. | ||
Duties:The general duty of the candidate shall be to assist in the preparation of TIGRESS for experimental campaigns at EMMA. This will primarily involve moving the TIGRESS detectors, cables, and frame The candidate will also become involved in testing detectors between moves, repairing and re-instgalling them, and other duties as they arise. | ||

Qualifications:EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: The successful candidate shall have a minimum of 2 terms of physical science (physics. chemistry, etc.), medical physics, or engineering, or two terms in a related technology program.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Through coursework, extracurricular activity, or work or life experience, the candidate shall demonstrate more than one of the following abilities: to work at height; to work in a light industrial setting; to assemble electrical, mechanical or structural systems; to work with delicate equipment; to troubleshoot simple electrical and electronic systems. IN ADDITION: Other experience relevant to this position includes electronic assembly (soldering, antistatic practices, clean rooms), other fine assembly jobs, cryogenics, vacuum or turbine systems, cranes, Linux and C. | ||

Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
