TRIUMF
Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics
STUDENT JOB PROGRAM
Spring 2019 job posting
Job number TR19-1-22

Position Title:

CANREB Winter Student

Name of Project:

Commissioning of the ARIEL-CANREB facility at TRIUMF

Overview:

TRIUMF is currently building the Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL), which will enhance the production of rare isotope beams used for probing fundamental questions in particle and nuclear physics. A critical part of this project is the CANadian Rare-isotope facility with Electron-beam ion source (CANREB), which is scheduled to begin delivering beams in late 2019. CANREB combines a high-resolution separator, a gas-filled radiofrequency quadrupole (RFQ) cooler/buncher, an electron beam ion source (EBIS) charge-breeder, and a Nier-type magnetic spectrometer, to produce charge-bred beams for post-acceleration. We are looking for a student to assist in the commissioning of the CANREB facility, scheduled to begin in January 2019.

Duties:

The student will assist in the commissioning of various CANREB systems, including the RFQ and EBIS. This will involve running stable ion beam through each device and performing tests to verify they reach the expected level of performance, and documenting the results. The student will also help develop and document procedures to streamline device operation. The student will be expected to learn the principles of operation for the RFQ and EBIS, becoming familiar with the diagnostic systems required to characterize each device.

Skills learned during this work experience:

The student will gain exposure to technology and techniques widely used in the field of nuclear, particle, and accelerator based research facilities worldwide. They will be exposed to a wide array of technologies, including ultrahigh vacuum, high voltage, electronics, and control systems. The student will gain firsthand experience in the operation of ion trapping systems, focused on the production, characterization, and purification of pulsed ion beams. In addition, the project will promote the development of valuable transferable skills, including working collaboratively on complex projects, the ability to finish tasks efficiently with attention to detail, and the clear communication of complex technical ideas and procedures to others.

Qualifications:

Experienced undergraduate physics student; basic knowledge of electrostatics; basic knowledge of computer software. Python programming experience would be beneficial.

Shiftwork required:

No

Period of work:

January to April 2019 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
