Position Title:CANREB Beam dynamics student
Name of Project:CANREB Nier-spectrometer commissioning
Overview:A new beamline called Nier-spectrometer is being installed in the CANREB facility at TRIUMF. This will be used to transport the extracted beam from an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) as well as to separate the required highly charged ions from the the background of residual gas ions. It consists of an electrostatic and a magnetic bender, which allows an achromatic mode of operation resulting in a high mass resolving power. Initial commissioning will take place with a test beam of highly charged ions from the EBIS. Commissioning effort will establish a systematic tune setup for the Nier-spectrometer. During this commissioning a high-level application for calibrating the Nier dipole magnet will be developed and tested.
Duties:-Functionality check of the optical elements in the Nier-spectrometer.-Characterization of the Nier-spectrometer for energy and mass selection. -Prepare a report on the commissioning results. -Developing a high-level application for mass-over-charge (m/q) calibration. -Additional opportunity in participation in commissioning of ARIEL test ion source.
Skills learned during this work experience:-Acquire knowledge in beam optics and mass separators.-This position would have the student analyzing the initial commissioning results from the Nier-spectrometer. -Simulations and programming skills (Beam optics code, Python, matlab, etc.). -Good communication and inter-personal skills.
Qualifications:2nd year and higher in Physics or Mathematical physics or Engineering physics.
Shiftwork required:No
Period of work:Jan - Apr 2019
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
