Position Title:Cryomodule Engineering Student
Name of Project:Cryomodule Development
Overview:TRIUMF is designing and fabricating a Heavy Ion Superconducting radio-frequency accelerating module. The module is based on an existing design but will include new features that have to be carefully modeled and designed.
Duties:The Student will be involved in the design of a Superconducting RF cryomodule designed for a heavy ion linear accelerator. Based on the existing experience of ISAC-II cryomodule, the work will develop new mechanisms for separated vacuum (RF/isolation) module. The work will involve solid works design, Finite element analysis for thermal or mechanical characteristics, parts tracking through machine shop and assembly.
Skills learned during this work experience:The Student will gain knowledge on RF, superconductivity, and cryogenics, master CAD and FEA tools to conduct mechanical and thermal simulations, and gain hands-on experience on mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, and vacuum technology. The completed mechanical design can be published in an international conference such as SRF conference. The training would strengthen student’s capability for his/her future career in mechanical engineering.
Qualifications:3-4 year Mechanical engineer or Engineering Physics student
Shiftwork required:No
Period of work:Jan-April 2019 with possible 4-month extension
