Position Title:PMT Test Facility Researcher
Name of Project:PMT Test Facililty
Overview:The PMT Test Facility (or PTF) is a facility in the TRIUMF Meson hall. The PTF is designed to allow detailed characterization of large PhotoMultiplier Tubes (PMTs) that are used in current experiments (like Super-Kamiokande) and future experiments (like Hyper-Kamiokande). The key features of the PTF are the ability to fire laser light at a PMT from arbitrary angles and directions and measure the reflected laser light at various points. We do this using a pair of optical heads that are translated/rotated using a motor-controlled gantry system. These measurements must all be done in water. We are in the middle of commissioning the PTF and are making the first complete measurements of Super-Kamiokande PMTs. The student would assist in this work.
Duties:The PTF is in full operation soon for a large range of detailed optical measurements for the Super-Kamiokande PMTs and prototype Hyper-Kamiokande PMTs.Her/his major duties would include - develop detailed measurement procedures, including position, angle, polarization, and magnetic field dependence. - help with many elements of operation, including motor-controllers, magnetic field measurements and electrical pulse digitizers - development and debugging of the modeling of the system with simulation code (GEANT) - detailed analysis of the PTF data for various types of PMTs - improvement of PTF setup for reduced uncertainties, increased flexibility and faster turn-around.
Skills learned during this work experience:- Operation of large photosensors- Operation of a complicated precision calibration system - Critical thinking and problem solving - Analysis of critical detector data and assessment of statistical and systematic uncertainties - Presentation skills from reports in regular meetings on national and international level
Qualifications:We are looking for a motivated physics student to work on an exciting HEP project. The core skills that we are looking for include- Ability to quickly learn several new computer tools and software packages. - Basic programming skills. - Experience in rapid and thorough data analysis. - Ability to independently solve problems and investigate alternatives. Beneficial skills would include - Experience with using Linux OS. - C++ programming experience. - Understanding of the basics of photo-multiplier tubes. - Experience with motor control systems. - ROOT experience.
Shiftwork required:No
Period of work:with possible 4-month extension
