TRIUMF Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics STUDENT JOB PROGRAM Fall 2018 job posting Job number TR18-3-18 | ||
---|---|---|
Position Title:Photo-detector developer | ||
Name of Project:Vacuum ultra-violet optical material characterization for the nEXO experiment | ||
Overview:The nEXO experiment is being designed to search for possible decay of Xenon nuclei into 2 betas but no neutrino that would show that neutrinos are their own anti-particle. Such a result would shed light onto what of the least understood particle. Efficient detection of the scintillation photons produced by betas (MeV electrons) is key to the identification of the zero neutrino decay mode. The scintillation photons wavelength is between 170 and 180nm, in the vacuum ultra-violet domain where material optical properties are poorly known. The scope of the project is to contribute to the commissioning of TRIUMF new VUV optics test setup by measuring reflectivity of various materials of interest in order to support the design of the nEXO experiment. | ||
Duties:Operation of VUV characterization test setup that includes a suite of light sources (flash lamp, deuterium lamp, laser) and photo-detectors (SIPMs, PMTs, photo-diode). Analysis of the setup data. Simulation of photon transport using the setup data. | ||
Skills learned during this work experience:Optics, especially vacuum UVSingle photon detection (SiPMs and PMTs) Analysis in C++ Operation of lab equipment neutrino physics | ||
Qualifications:Physics or engineering physics. year 3-4. 1 previous work term desirable. Some computing experience. Linux and C++ are assets. Experience in operation of optical system is an asset. | ||
Shiftwork required:No | ||
Period of work:Sep - Dec 2018 with possible 4-month extension | ||
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we
welcome applications from all qualified undergraduate students as defined below:
Applications must be received at TRIUMF by 4:00pm Pacific time on 2018-05-24.
