Position Title:

Applications Integrator for CANREB Commissioning

Name of Project:

High-Level Applications Integration with CANREB Commissioning.

Overview:

High-Level applications are programs that interface with control systems and beam physics models. These tools range from real-time diagnostic visualizations to post-processing data analysis. At TRIUMF, the concept of web-based control room applications is being explored to advance the capabilities of these applications and facilitate operations.

Several web-applications are already available which could facilitate CANREB commissioning (Beam Envelope, Tomography, TuneX, etc). These applications will need to be beta tested during commissioning, and it is anticipated that issues will arise. To improve the experience of the users (i.e. the commissioning team) it is essential that these issues are addressed immediately, ideally by someone sitting with the commissioning team in the control room. This is a role that a motivated student, after a few weeks of training, could fulfill.

Duties:

(1) Learn about the existing web-applications, and complete the XML description of the CANREB beamlines.
(2) Participate to CANREB commissioning, address possible issues, and benchmark the applications with actual data.

Skills learned during this work experience:

(1) Acquire background in beam optics and accelerator physics
(2) Gain experience with web application development
(3) Hands-on participation in beamline commissioning

Qualifications:

Physics background. Understanding of linear optics and classical mechanics. Programming skills.

Shiftwork required:

No

Period of work:

Sep - Dec 2018 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
