TRIUMF Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics STUDENT JOB PROGRAM Fall 2018 job posting Job number TR18-3-15 | ||
---|---|---|
Position Title:Superconducting RF (SRF) Development Student | ||
Name of Project:Heat treatment studies of SRF resonators and Beamline Installation | ||
Overview:The TRIUMF SRF group is engaged in on-going development to improve the performance of SRF cavities for linear accelerator application. Recently heat treatments with doping agents such as Nitrogen have been used to significantly improve SRF cavity performance. The process is far from optimized. This work will form a systematic study of heat treatment and agent as characterized by cryogenic rf testing. The goal is to find surface treatments to optimize cavity performance for high Q and high field. A parallel but aligned activity will be in preparing components of a beamline for installation. The beamline is to be used for sample testing of SRF materials. | ||
Duties:To address these questions the student will:(1)Use an induction furnace to heat treat rf resonators under different doping scenarios and characterize with cold test, (2)Prepare cavities for cold test (3)Prepare beamline components for installation | ||
Skills learned during this work experience:In total the R&D efforts of the RF/SRF group are ideally suited for undergraduate participation with professional, PhD student and post-doc supervision. The student will become familiar with general RF superconductivity, cavity processing and testing, beamlines. The technology includes mechanical assembly, Vacuum, chemical etching, cryogenics and SCRF. | ||
Qualifications:Student after 3 university terms for Physics Engineering/Physics. The job will require some experience with mechanical and electronics assembly, rf and Solidworks/Labview/Matlab experience would be an asset. | ||
Shiftwork required:No | ||
Period of work:Sept-Dec 2018 with possible 4-month extension | ||
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we
welcome applications from all qualified undergraduate students as defined below:
Applications must be received at TRIUMF by 4:00pm Pacific time on 2018-05-24.
