TRIUMF Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics STUDENT JOB PROGRAM Fall 2018 job posting Job number TR18-3-14 | ||
---|---|---|
Position Title:3D CAD analyst (electro-mechanical) / Scientific computing | ||
Name of Project:ARIEL Target Stations - High Voltage & Thermal simulations and analysis | ||
Overview:The ARIEL project at TRIUMF is very important for TRIUMF's future ion beams' production and its future scientific program. ARIEL will have two target stations, capable of taking high power electron and proton driver beams - from the electron linac and respectively from the 500MeV cyclotron. These target stations are mechanical/electrical installations, loaded with radioactive targets that run at high voltage potential in a radioactive environment with the purpose of delivering rare isotopes beams for research studies. The electron target station requires special design optimizations for withstanding concentrate power depositions and for safety operation. | ||
Duties:The student will provide engineering support for the ARIEL target stations. The work consists in developing an optimized 3D CAD model in SolidWorks; performing electrostatic and mechanical (thermal/structural) simulations using software such as COMSOL Multiphysics and ANSYS (Workbench/APDL); analyzing the results and optimizing the design; review drawings and perform prototype testing and data collection. | ||
Skills learned during this work experience:This work term would give an opportunity to get in depth understanding of electrostatic, high voltage and thermo-mechanical stresses using simulation software and performing analytical analysis. The student will be exposed to a complex system which would allow her/him to gain knowledge of: high voltage, electrostatics, vacuum, remote handling, materials in radiation environment, ion beam extraction/transport from targets/ion sources, mechanical stresses (thermal/structural) and technical drawings. During the term and at the end of it, the student may issue design notes and reports. Also, the student may learn about project management, participate in design reviews/meetings, give presentations, interact with a team of engineers, scientists and technologists, as well as work with the design office and machine shop. | ||
Qualifications:This position is suitable for students in mechanical engineering or engineering physics.Primarily, the candidate should have good 3D CAD (SolidWorks) skills for building, changing and manipulating models. Secondary requirements: general knowledge of electrostatics and heat transfer, basic electricity and an interest in performing complex simulations. Knowledge of COMSOL Multiphysics and ANSYS Workbench (with some mechanical APDL), and a programming language would be considered an asset. | ||
Shiftwork required:No | ||
Period of work:with possible 4-month extension | ||
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we
welcome applications from all qualified undergraduate students as defined below:
Applications must be received at TRIUMF by 4:00pm Pacific time on 2018-05-24. To apply for any of the job postings, you must submit one application for each and every job for which you wish to be considered. Please combine all documents into one PDF for each job. All applications can be attached to one email in PDF format. Please do not send electronic documents in formats other than PDF. Please save the PDF as lastname-job number (eg Smith-15.pdf)
