Summer 2018 job posting
Job number TR18-2-34

Position Title:

Upgrade of the ATLAS detector at the LHC

Name of Project:

Upgrade of the ATLAS Muon System with Large Area Small Strip Thin Gap Chambers

Overview:

After the first two successful runs, the ATLAS Collaboration is engaged to exploit the full physics potential of the LHC scheduled to operate at increasing luminosities in the coming years. This will make the forward muon detector subject to high occupancies leading to problems in reconstructing forward muon tracks. It will also result in higher event trigger rates due to high levels of background rates. To address this, ATLAS will replace the forward muon detectors (called the muon wheels) with new high precision muon chambers that will have improved trigger capabilities which will allow for a reduction in the background levels.

Duties:

- Quality control of large scale (1mx2m) printed circuit boards produced in industry

- HV insulation and conductivity tests

- Mechanical tests on planarity

- Precision measurements on produced boards using state of the art optical coordinate measurement machine

- Extended stays at company in Nevada for quality control

Skills learned during this work experience:

- Production processes of large area printed circuit boards

- Quality assurance procedures

- Working principles of thin gap chamber gas detectors

- Knowledge of experimental challenges related to particle physics

Qualifications:

- Attention to detail
- Mechanical aptitude
- Use of excel, google drives, etc

Shiftwork required:

No

Period of work:

May - Aug 2018 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
