Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics
STUDENT JOB PROGRAM
Summer 2018 job posting
Job number TR18-2-12
Position Title:Nuclear Medicine Target Research Assistant
Name of Project:Ac-225 production target development
Overview:Ac-225 is a sought after isotope with demonstrated ability to effectively treat late-stage cancers. While access to Ac-225 remains scarce due to limited global production and high cost, TRIUMF’s 500 MeV cyclotron has the potential to one of the most potent future sources of this isotope. Our division is currently developing production of this isotope on BL1A that will secure an Ac-22 supply for our own researchers, our collaborators, and for potential commercialization.
Duties:The successful candidate will assist in target research including the design, modelling, and documentation of an improved target design that will enable safe yet optimal production of Ac-225. If the design is successful he/she will be involved in publishing the results.
Skills learned during this work experience:Basic knowledge in medical physics and isotope production will be acquired, as will familiarity with specialized software applications for thermodynamic modelling, mechanical modelling, and Monte Carlo simulations. Mechanical skills, drawing skills, design skills, writing skills, and project management skills will be improved or learned.
Qualifications:The successful candidate must have a background in engineering physics, engineering, or physics. Experience in mechanical assembly and familiarity with applications such as SolidWorks, ANSYS CFX, ANSYS Mechanical, FLUKA, or MATLAB are considered an asset.
Period of work:May - Aug 2018
Jobs are open to all qualified undergraduate students. |
Due to the volume of applications we receive, the TRIUMF Job Number must be clearly indicated on the application.
Applications must include:
A separate application must be submitted for each job the student wishes to be considered for.
Students should apply through their co-op office, where applicable, with the co-op office forwarding on their applications to TRIUMF. For those students not in a co-op program, applications (one PDF document for each job) may be sent directly to TRIUMF to email@example.com
Paper copies mailed to TRIUMF will be accepted as well, but email is the preferred method.
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 1810 to $ 2710 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
