Spring 2018 job posting
Job number TR18-1-8

Position Title:

Undergraduate Research on the ATLAS ITK Upgrade

Name of Project:

Tracking detector upgrade for the ATLAS experiment

Overview:

After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC, an upgrade to the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) has been agreed. It will operate at instantaneous luminosities up to 7x10^34 Hz/cm2, accumulating 3000/fb of data by around 2035. To take advantage of the unique discovery potential of the HL-LHC, the current ATLAS inner tracking detector must be replaced. The conceptual design of a new all-silicon tracker (ITk) has 5 pixel layers and 4 strip layers.

The Western Cluster of TRIUMF, UBC and SFU will build two and a half discs-worth of strip modules for the end-cap region.

Duties:

- Contribute to prototype production of ATLAS silicon-strip detector-modules using high-tech equipment, including an automatic wire-bonder, a wire-bond pull tester, an optical coordinate measuring machine (CMM), and a probe station

- Contribute to programming an automatic gantry robot to place modules on support structures. Involves image analysis to find markers, and moving the robot to place the module with 20 micron precision

- Develop image recognition for automated QC looking for missing wire-bonds etc.

Skills learned during this work experience:

- Silicon detector operation and trouble shooting

- High performance wire bonding

- Knowledge of experimental challenges related to particle physics

- Modern image recognition methods with openCV

Qualifications:

Physics or Engineering Physics program, 2nd Year or more completed

Hardware experience required
Interest in robotic vision a plus
Ability with geometry algebra and understanding reference systems
Computer programming skills required

Shiftwork required:

No

Period of work:

Jan-April 2018 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
