Position Title:Dark-Matter Detector Developer/Operator
Name of Project:Operation and Development of Argon-Based Dark-Matter Experiments.
Overview:Multiple cosmological and astrophysical evidence indicates that ~27% the universe is composed of weakly interacting heavy matter commonly referred to as Dark Matter. While many indirect observations have been made, the direct observation of Dark Matter is of high priority in fundamental physics, leading to the discovery of new physics. DEAP-3600 and the DarkSide-20k are two multi-tonne liquid argon experiments, both designed to perform world-leading searches for coherent-elastic scattering between Dark Matter particles and argon nuclei. The DEAP-3600 detector, currently taking physics data, offers the perfect opportunity to operate such large-scale experiment first-hand, as well as to contribute to the characterization of the detector response. The DarkSide-20k detector instead, currently under development, offers a unique opportunity to directly participate in the R&D and the designing of different detector’s components.
Duties:- Operate the DEAP-3600 experiment, which includes: setting up calibration data runs, completing physics data taking, and data quality control.- Characterise a selected detector's response parameter of the DEAP-3600 experiment (analysis task). - Contribute to the R&D program of DarkSide-20k. - Summarise results in a technical note or publication (Latex).
Skills learned during this work experience:- Operation of a large-scale dark matter detector.- Scientific computing (analysis software, C++, Python). - Statistics. - Knowledge of photo-detectors, (Photo-multipliers tubes, and Silicon photo-multipliers). - Knowledge of general physics detector's technologies. - Scientific reporting (Latex).
Qualifications:- Minimum qualifications: basic programming skills.- Desired qualifications: knowledge of C++ and root, basic understanding of particle physics.
Shiftwork required:Yes
Period of work:Jan - Apr 2018 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
