Overview:

The Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) is TRIUMF’s flagship multidisciplinary research facility. This world-class facility will broaden Canada’s research capabilities in particle physics, nuclear physics, nuclear medicine, and materials science.

This posting is an opportunity to work with the multi-faceted TRIUMF Diagnostics group as we develop and prepare beamline diagnostic devices that will be used throughout the ARIEL facility.

This is a unique opportunity to progress the design of, and learn about, particle beam diagnostic devices including those used to measure beam position, profile and intensity.

Duties:

The candidate will participate in a variety of activities related to ARIEL diagnostic devices including:

- Mechanical assembly

- Electrical wiring

- Alignment

- Vacuum leak checking

- Mechanical and electrical testing

- Machining a variety of small to medium parts

Skills learned during this work experience:

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about a wide range of mechanical systems, and develop and improve many skills, such as:

- Interpreting mechanical drawings and electrical schematics

- Hands-on mechanical assembly

- Electrical wiring and soldering

- Learning about particle beam diagnostic devices

- Learning about vacuum systems, bellows, seals, leak checking

- Learning about pneumatics, stepper motors, lead screws

- Practicing the safe operation of a variety of machine tools - milling machines, lathes, hand tools, welding processes

Qualifications:

This position is best suited for a student from a Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology program for their 2nd or 3rd work term.

The candidate should have hands-on experience working with mechanical assemblies, interpreting assembly drawings and working with tools. Experience with Solidworks, machine tools (mill, lathe), and soldering would also be assets.

Jan - Apr 2018 with possible 4-month extension  
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
