STUDENT JOB PROGRAM
Spring 2018 job posting
Job number TR18-1-21

Position Title:

Nuclear Medicine Chemistry Research Assistant

Name of Project:

Production and application of imaging and therapeutic radionuclides at TRIUMF

Overview:

The increasing incidence of cancer worldwide is pushing clinicians and researchers to broaden and improve the available treatment arsenal. The usage of radionuclides for medical imaging and therapy has long research and application history. Efficient and reliable production of medical radionuclides has become a very important task due to the increasing need for novel radiopharmaceuticals. Accelerator production of medical radionuclides along with reactor production are two main routes. Usually after production, medical radionuclides required radiochemical purification for further pre-clinical and clinical application. TRIUMF operates several powerful cyclotrons which are currently utilized for various purposes (including medical isotope production). TRIUMF also operates one of the largest cyclotrons in the world with 500 MeV proton energy; this particle accelerator can enable production of many novel radionuclides for nuclear medicine.
Our goal is to create effective therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals based on alpha (e. g. 225Ac/213Bi, 227Th, 223Ra) and auger (119Sb, 125I, 103mRh) emitting radionuclides as well to expand our imaging “toolbox” with additional radionuclides with various half-lives (e.g. 44Sc, 90Nb, 89Zr).

Duties:

The successful candidate will assist with production and radiochemical separation of medical radionuclides at various particle accelerator facilities (including TR-13 and main 500 MeV cyclotron). Further, candidate will be involved in chelation experiments to attach produced radionuclides to the biomolecules in collaboration with UBC, chemistry department and other national and international partners. As well, the candidate will also be involved are in vitro and in vivo evaluation of radiolabelled compounds with various collaboration partners (e.g. British Columbia Cancer Agency, U. Wisconsin and others).

Skills learned during this work experience:

Hands-on knowledge and experience on targetry and radiochemical processing of irradiated targets. Knowledge on radionuclide pre-conditioning for medical applications, radiolabeling of biomolecules and biological evaluation of radiopharmaceuticals.

Qualifications:

This position requires basic knowledge in several subjects, including physics, chemistry and biochemistry. Experience in inorganic chemistry lab work and knowledge in radioactivity handling will be considered assets.

Shiftwork required:

No

Period of work:

Jan - Apr 2018 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.

TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified undergraduate students as defined below:

  • Canadian undergraduate students or Canadian Permanent Resident undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited post secondary institution in Canada (or outside Canada) who are studying in a vocational or professional training program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate.
  • Foreign full-time undergraduate students currently enrolled at a designated learning institution at the post-secondary level, and who are studying in an academic, vocational or professional training program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate that is at least six months in duration, and who have a valid Canadian study permit which allows for employment off-campus, and who have applied for a Social Insurance Number
  • Foreign undergraduate students enrolled in a recognized undergraduate program of study abroad who have accepted, or are in the process of accepting, an "Invitation to Apply" for a work permit under the International Experience Canada (IEC) program http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/iec/apply.asp

Applications must be received at TRIUMF by 4:00pm Pacific time on 2017-09-20.
