Position Title:Accelerator Physics Co-op Student
Name of Project:Investigation of Tomography Reconstruction Method for Emittance Measurement
Overview:Accelerator operations at TRIUMF require reliable diagnostic measurements for efficient beam delivery. The MENT (Maximum ENTropy) algorithm reconstructs real-space beam distributions on target from a limited number of measured beam profiles. A web-based graphical user interface has been written that utilizes the MENT algorithm for phase-space reconstruction. The goal of this project is to automate the scanning procedure required as input for the MENT algorithm. This automation will increase the use of this algorithm at TRIUMF by providing a robust measurement method.
Duties:The successful applicant's scope of work ranges from the automation of the input scan procedure, to optimization of input parameters for reliable tomographic reconstruction, to continuing the web application development for running the tomography program itself. Extensive programming in python and javascript will be required to undertake this task. Work may also extend to other accelerator physics systems that require bench-marking, characterization, and optimization.
Skills learned during this work experience:The successful applicant will gain experience with ion beam optics, reconstruction algorithms, optimization techniques, and web application development.
Qualifications:Program: Physics/Computer Science/EngineeringSkills: knowledge of basic computer programming Assets: python, javascript, or prior web application development experience *Computational Physics background an asset*
Shiftwork required:No
Period of work:Four months with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we
