Position Title:

Developer of thermo-chromatographic separation methods

Name of Project:

Development and characterization of thermo-chromatographic separation methods.

Overview:

The project includes the preparation of target materials and the addition of volatile contaminants (e.g. various halides, sulfides, oxides), heating them in a prototype high-temperature vacuum furnace and analyzing the release products. Initial tests need to be performed by collecting the release products on a catcher foil and taking samples for external analysis (SEM-EDX, AAS or various mass spec methods). The main variables in the tests are composition of target materials and contaminants and temperature.
Within the scope of this work the tests would be limited to non-active materials.

Duties:

Laboratory work (inorganic chemistry):
- preparation of test materials (mainly refractory carbides and oxides)
- running test series with a prototype high-temperature vacuum furncace
- analyzing test samples with various methods (SEM-EDX, AAS, mass spec)

Development work:
- improving design of prototype furnace
- implementing and testing design modifications

Skills learned during this work experience:

The student will
obtain skills in operating complex research equipment,
learn about preparation of refractory materials, high-temperature chemistry and analytical methods,
learn about the production and characterization of rare isotopes,
gain experience in teamwork, management of small to medium-sized projects, international research environment.

Qualifications:

Helpful skills and experiences:
- inorganic chemistry
- basic knowledge of nuclear physics
- mechanical design and assembly

Shiftwork required:

Yes

Period of work:

Jan - Apr 2018 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay.
