TRIUMF Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics STUDENT JOB PROGRAM Spring 2018 job posting Job number TR18-1-1 | ||
---|---|---|
Position Title:CANREB Research Co-op | ||
Name of Project:Installation and testing of the CANREB RFQ, Pulsed Drift Tube, and EBIS | ||
Overview:TRIUMF is enhancing its rare isotope production capabilities by creating a new scientific infrastructure known as the Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL). A critical part of this expansion is the CANadian Rare-isotope facility with Electron-Beam ion source (CANREB) project which combines a high-resolution separator, a gas-filled radiofrequency quadrupole (RFQ) cooler and buncher, a pulsed drift tube (PDT), an electron beam ion source (EBIS) charge-breeder, and a Nier-type magnetic spectrometer to deliver pure rare isotope beam for post-acceleration. We are looking for a student to help with standalone testing of the RFQ buncher, PDT, and EBIS to prepare for commissioning with ion beam. | ||
Duties:The work entails assisting with installing and testing the equipment required for the CANREB RFQ, PDT and EBIS, with the goal of preparing said systems for testing with beam from an offline ion source. The equipment includes but is not limited to: vacuum pumps, valves, pressure readouts, gas flow controllers, RF circuits, cooling systems, electron sources, superconducting magnets, and static and switched DC circuits, with voltages ranging from a few hundred volts up to 60 kV. | ||
Skills learned during this work experience:The student will gain exposure to technology and techniques which are widely used in experimental work at particle, nuclear and accelerator based research facilities worldwide. They gain firsthand experience in areas such as vacuum technology and high voltage systems. This experience will provide an in-depth knowledge to the types of tools, materials, equipment, and technology relevant to the field. Furthermore, this project will help promote various transferable skills such as the ability to finish tasks with speed, efficiency, and attention to detail as well as learn how to work collaboratively to complete complex tasks. In addition, the results of the RFQ tests will be presented in a technical publication, and the student will be highly encouraged to present the results at a relevant conference. | ||
Qualifications:The student should be enrolled in a physics or other physical sciences related program. An interest in accelerator-based science is desired. All experience levels will be considered. Relevant skills include mechanical assembly capability, good practice when handling UHV components, familiarity with DC and RF (1-10 MHz) electrical systems, knowledge of the essentials of vacuum systems, and an understanding of the basic principles of the production, transport, and detection of low energy ion beams. | ||
Shiftwork required:No | ||
Period of work:4 months with possible 4-month extension | ||
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we
welcome applications from all qualified undergraduate students as defined below:
Applications must be received at TRIUMF by 4:00pm Pacific time on 2017-09-20.
