Position Title:TIGRESS Undergraduate Research Assistant -- Gas Counter
Name of Project:TIGRESS
Overview:TIGRESS -- the TRIUMF-ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape Suppressed Spectrometer -- is a state-of-the-art gamma-ray detector array. It consists of commercial, custom-built semiconductor and inorganic scintillator gamma-ray detectors and custom-built gas counters. It is used for experiments studying the structure of exotic nuclei. A new high-rate gas counter is presently under development. In addition, all detectors require manpower for custom detector setups and for quality control. Typically, experiments run around the clock.
Duties:The candidate will participate in the design, construction, testing, and hopefully first implementation of a tilted-plane gas ionization counter for in-beam experiments, and to operate a Bragg-type ionization counter for beam diagnostics. In addition the candidate shall assist in experiments performed with TIGRESS and in the maintenance and setup of the array between experiments. Tasks may include: designing electronic circuits and circuit boards; mechanical assembly; simulating gas counter performance; calibrating detector elements; monitoring experimental data as it is collected; analyzing data after an experiment; testing detectors and associated equipment for out-of-specification performance, and subsequently, troubleshooting and fixing them. Detailed task assignment shall be based on the needs of the experimental program and the skills of the candidate.
Skills learned during this work experience:Fundamentals of nuclear radiation; radiation measurement; data analysis; signal transmission and processing;
Qualifications:REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate shall have a minimum 5 terms of physical science (physics. chemistry, etc.), medical physics, or engineering, and have demonstrated through course work an understanding of electrical circuit theory, measurement uncertainties and error propagation. The successful candidate shall have taken a 2nd year physics laboratory class, or discipline-specific equivalent. IN ADDITION: Linux and C experience are very valuable assets. Other experience assets relevant to this position include electronic assembly (soldering, antistatic practices, clean rooms), other fine assembly jobs, oscilloscopes, cryogenics, vacuum or turbine systems, cranes.
Shiftwork required:No
Period of work:September to December 2017 with possible 4-month extension
Salary is commensurate with academic progress and previous relevant work experience, and
ranges from $ 2080 to $ 2800 per month plus 4% vacation pay. TRIUMF pays round-trip airfare (this does not apply to Vancouver/Victoria students); for Vancouver Island students, TRIUMF will pay ferry costs.
